The Story Behind Patagonia Plants
Remko Boevé’s journey in the horticultural industry began at the age of 11, when his parents founded Boevé BV, a company specializing in the international trade of tree and shrub seeds, rootstocks and young plants.
From an early age, Remko developed a strong interest in the seed business and spent much of his free time helping his father with everything from seed collection to cleaning and processing. After completing a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Business Administration, he joined the family business full-time and began exploring opportunities in South America. It was there that the foundations of Patagonia Plants were laid.
During the early 2000s, Remko travelled extensively throughout South America on behalf of Boevé BV. Inspired by the extraordinary flora and landscapes of Argentina and Chile, he began working with Andrés Casassus of Jardin Pehuen, near Santiago, to produce native Chilean plants for the European market. This partnership marked the beginning of Patagonia Plants.
By 2010, the company had successfully imported more than 100 different species of native plants from Chile and Argentina, introducing a wide range of distinctive South American flora to European growers and nurseries.
When Boevé BV ceased operations in 2010, Remko remained active within the horticultural industry through various ventures. In 2018, he decided to once again establish his own business, bringing Patagonia Plants back to life.
Following the passing of Andrés Casassus in 2022 and the subsequent closure of Jardin Pehuen, Patagonia Plants began searching for a new production partner in Chile. This led to a successful collaboration with Cultiva, a CITES-approved nursery involved in major reforestation and environmental initiatives.
Together with Cultiva, Patagonia Plants is now developing new production of a growing range of native Chilean plants, with the aim of significantly expanding the assortment available to customers in the coming years.
Although Patagonia Plants is based in the Netherlands, the company has always had an international outlook. Through decades of cooperation with growers, collectors, nurseries and seed specialists around the world, Remko has built an extensive global network and deep knowledge of the international horticultural trade.
Today, this experience enables Patagonia Plants to connect reliable producers with customers worldwide and to supply high-quality seeds and plants with a strong focus on origin, sustainability and long-term partnerships.
