Araucaria araucana

For more than 20 years, Patagonia Plants has been active in the international market for Araucaria araucana, commonly known as the Monkey Puzzle Tree.

Our involvement with the species began in the late 1990s, when we imported Araucaria araucana seed from Argentina. Changes to CITES regulations in 2000 brought this trade to an end and required a new, fully compliant approach to international supply.

In the early 2000s, we established a close partnership with Jardin Pehuen, the first Chilean nursery approved under CITES to artificially propagate Araucaria araucana seedlings for commercial trade. Following the death of the company’s founder in 2022 and the subsequent closure of Jardin Pehuen, we began developing a new long-term production partnership in Chile.

Since 2010, KMS Japan has been a trusted partner in our Araucaria araucana activities, helping us ensure continuity, quality and reliable supply to our customers.

Today, Patagonia Plants works in partnership with KMS Japan and the CITES-approved Chilean producer Cultiva. Cultiva is involved in reforestation and environmental projects in Chile and shares our commitment to responsible production, sustainability and the long-term conservation of native Chilean flora.

We are proud to offer true-origin Chilean Araucaria araucana seedlings of consistently high quality, produced and traded in full compliance with CITES regulations.

For customers within the European Union, plants can be supplied without the need for an additional CITES import permit. For destinations outside the EU, a CITES import permit may be required, and we provide the necessary export documentation to support the import process.
